Tencent Holdings has initiated a restricted trial of Xiaowei, an artificial intelligence assistant integrated into WeChat, the company’s dominant super application serving more than 1.4 billion users across China. The feature is currently accessible only to a carefully selected subset of users.

The technology behind Xiaowei relies predominantly on WeLM, Tencent’s proprietary large language model. When necessary, certain user inquiries are routed to DeepSeek for additional processing, as confirmed by representatives from Tencent’s customer support division.
