At Tuesday’s Google I/O conference, the company revealed a comprehensive transformation of its flagship Search product, describing it as the most significant evolution in the platform’s quarter-century existence. GOOGL shares settled at $384.90, declining 2.09% during regular trading hours, before gaining 0.39% in early pre-market activity.

The highlight of the presentation is a completely rebuilt Search interface, powered by the latest Gemini 3.5 Flash technology. This adaptive search box expands on demand and processes multiple input types including text, images, uploaded files, video content, and even Chrome browser tabs.
The platform now supports ongoing dialogue directly within AI Overview panels, transitioning smoothly into AI Mode functionality. According to Google, conversational context persists throughout entire user sessions.
The standout innovation may be what Google calls “information agents.” These autonomous background assistants continuously track the web and send notifications when user-defined criteria are satisfied.
Google demonstrated several scenarios: one agent monitoring for a celebrity athlete’s sneaker partnership reveal, while another tracks rental property listings matching detailed user preferences. Both operate continuously without requiring manual user intervention.
The information agent functionality will become available initially to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription tiers during the summer months.
Robust Financial Performance from Search
This announcement follows impressive first-quarter financial results. Google‘s Search and advertising segment generated $60.4 billion in revenue, marking a 19% increase year-over-year. The company’s total quarterly revenue reached $109.9 billion.
AI Mode, which debuted twelve months ago, has already attracted more than 1 billion monthly active users. Query volume has experienced exponential growth, more than doubling quarter-over-quarter since its launch, with the previous quarter setting a new record for total Search queries.
Google is also integrating agentic coding features directly into Search. This functionality enables Search to construct customised dashboards, tracking tools, and lightweight applications instantly based on user inquiries. One demonstration showed a personalised fitness and nutrition tracker generated using individual schedule data, gym membership information, and local weather patterns.
These “generative UI” features will roll out to all users at no cost this summer.
Gemini Platform Receives Major Updates
Alongside Search enhancements, Gemini is receiving significant improvements. The application features a refreshed interface, Gemini Live for conversational interactions, and a Daily Brief function that syncs with Gmail and Calendar to provide personalised daily summaries.
A new feature called Gemini Spark functions as a personal assistant with expanded capabilities. It can analyse credit card transactions to identify recurring fees or track school communications for upcoming assignment deadlines. Users maintain control over which applications connect to Spark, and the agent seeks explicit approval before executing financial transactions or sending messages.
Gemini’s user base has expanded to 900 million monthly active users, representing substantial growth from 400 million just one year earlier.
This expansion occurs amid intensifying market competition. OpenAI disclosed 900 million weekly active users this past February, along with more than 50 million paid subscribers.
Google announced that Personal Intelligence features within AI Mode are expanding availability to nearly 200 countries spanning 98 languages, accessible without requiring a subscription.
