Dow Jones futures declined 1.08%, while S&P 500 futures retreated 0.86%. Futures tracking the Cboe Volatility Index advanced 2.03%, signaling heightened investor anxiety.
Traders were also anticipating the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes scheduled for afternoon release, contributing to the cautious market sentiment.
The 10-year Treasury yield advanced to 4.574%, maintaining downward pressure on stocks as bond yields remain elevated.
Alibaba Powers Higher on Strong Performance Metrics
Alibaba emerged as Wednesday’s top performer, with the stock climbing approximately 10% during early market activity.

Company briefings revealed that its instant-commerce division experienced narrowing losses during the June quarter while maintaining solid overall profitability. These results helped alleviate investor concerns ahead of the company’s scheduled August 28 earnings announcement.
Additional reports highlighted accelerating growth in Alibaba Cloud’s artificial intelligence services, with the company working to integrate its AI agent technologies into a unified platform.
The Chinese tech giant also maintained its ongoing share repurchase initiative. The stock’s advance was part of broader strength among Hong Kong-listed technology companies, as investors returned to the sector on expectations of improving financial results.
MasTec shares advanced 2% following the announcement of its approximately $1.65 billion acquisition of Superior Group. The transaction structure includes $475 million in equity and $1.175 billion in cash consideration.
The Superior Group acquisition brings specialized capabilities in electrical infrastructure and building systems tailored for data center applications. MasTec anticipates the deal will be immediately accretive to revenue, adjusted EBITDA, earnings per share, and operating cash flow metrics.
Management projects Superior will deliver between $2.2 billion and $2.5 billion in revenue during fiscal year 2027.
Notable Decliners: FuelCell Energy and Kura Sushi Retreat
FuelCell Energy led losses Wednesday, plunging 18% following the announcement of a public equity offering involving 10.71 million shares priced at $21.00 per share. The offering generated $225 million in gross proceeds, exceeding the company’s original $200 million fundraising target.
The underwriting syndicate received an option to purchase an additional 1.61 million shares. The company plans to allocate proceeds toward manufacturing capacity expansion initiatives and working capital requirements.
Kura Sushi declined approximately 5% after revising its fiscal 2026 full-year revenue forecast to a range of $330.5 million to $331.5 million, falling short of the $334.1 million analyst consensus estimate.
Second-quarter revenue increased 16% on a year-over-year basis, though elevated food and beverage costs driven by tariffs pressured the company’s outlook. Management noted that enhanced labor productivity helped boost restaurant-level operating margins to 19.1%.
