Travala, a Singapore-headquartered cryptocurrency travel service, has introduced what the company describes as the first agentic AI travel protocol worldwide. This innovative system enables AI agents to locate, book and process hotel payments through USDC on Coinbase’s Base network.
Dubbed the Travel MCP (Model Context Protocol), this new offering became operational on June 4 and can be accessed via Claude Desktop. Independent developers have the option to incorporate it into their custom AI travel applications as well.
Booking transactions incur approximately $0.01 in fees, with settlements occurring almost instantaneously. No ETH holdings are necessary to pay for network operations, since the USDC stablecoin payment covers all expenses.
The service features over 2.2 million hotel properties distributed across 230 territories. Available accommodations include establishments from major chains such as Marriott, Hilton and IHG, obtained through aggregator partnerships.
Payment Infrastructure Details
The protocol operates on Coinbase’s x402 payments framework, which was designed exclusively for managing stablecoin transfers involving AI agents.
Travala implements ERC-7715 session keys, enabling users to provide AI agents with restricted signing capabilities. This architecture allows the agent to initiate payment requests while the traveler maintains ultimate signing control through their wallet.
The system also employs ERC-8004, ensuring every transaction is machine-verifiable. This allows both the AI and blockchain to validate booking completion without requiring human verification of confirmation emails.
Despite this automation level, travelers must still manually approve the final payment stage. While the system represents a significant advancement beyond basic chatbots, complete autonomy remains unrealized.
Developer Rewards and Future Development
Travala has implemented a 10% rebate program in Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin to incentivize developers who integrate AI agents with the platform.
The platform’s AVA loyalty token is positioned to facilitate upcoming Travel MCP applications. AVA presently enables membership levels and booking incentives throughout the platform.
Travala processes payments in more than 100 different cryptocurrencies in addition to traditional currencies. Established in 2017, the company operates in competition with services like Sleap.io and Alternative Airlines.
This release arrives amid an expanding wave of cryptocurrency payment solutions targeting AI agent functionality. Wallets connected to the x402 protocol on Base have recently exceeded 100 million total transactions.
According to Travala CEO Juan Otero, this launch represents “the death of the checkout button” and signals the beginning of “a truly autonomous travel economy.”
The organization announced plans to extend the protocol’s capabilities beyond hotel accommodations to encompass airline bookings and other travel offerings down the road.
