Austin-headquartered defense technology company Saronic Technologies has unveiled its intention to construct a $3.2 billion manufacturing complex in southern Texas. The ambitious project, designated Port Alpha, will occupy a site within the Port of Brownsville.
Texas’s Governor Greg Abbott publicly endorsed the development, noting that the substantial capital commitment will bring 10,000 employment positions to the area.
The manufacturing complex will specialize in producing medium-to-large autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) intended for both military and civilian maritime applications. This represents a significant growth phase for Saronic as the market for unmanned naval technology continues expanding.
Historic Combat Deployment of Saronic’s Autonomous Technology
The Port Alpha announcement follows closely on the heels of a significant military achievement. U.S. Central Command disclosed on Monday that American forces had employed weaponized maritime drones in active combat operations for the first time in history.
Three Corsair unmanned surface vessels manufactured by Saronic participated in an attack against Iran’s naval facility at Bandar Abbas. The autonomous craft successfully eliminated a submarine and damaged a vessel maintenance structure at the installation.
The Corsair platform is a 24-foot autonomous watercraft that functions without onboard personnel. It represents one of Saronic’s flagship offerings and played a crucial role in this historic military engagement.
