Shares of Joby Aviation experienced a 3.8% uptick Monday after the electric aircraft manufacturer successfully concluded New York City’s maiden electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi demonstration program.
The electric aircraft took off from JFK International Airport and landed at multiple heliport locations throughout Manhattan, including the Downtown Skyport facility and both the West 30th Street and East 34th Street Heliport locations in the Midtown area.
The demonstration flights completed the JFK-to-Manhattan journey in less than 10 minutes. By comparison, the identical route via automobile typically requires anywhere from 60 to 120 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
The weeklong demonstration program operates under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, an initiative established through executive order designed to accelerate the commercial deployment of electric aviation transportation.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey collaborated with Joby and the Federal Aviation Administration to execute the demonstration flight series.
“The campaign offers the first real-world demonstration of how electric air taxis, which are quiet and produce zero operating emissions, will be able to connect the region,” Joby said in its announcement.
Joby’s footprint in New York is anchored by its 2025 acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger operations. Blade transported over 90,000 passengers in 2025 and maintains existing infrastructure at Manhattan sites and regional airports throughout the New York area.
Progress Toward FAA Certification
Joby is navigating the concluding phases of FAA certification. The company recently conducted its first conforming aircraft flight for Type Inspection Authorization, a critical milestone enabling FAA pilots to execute for-credit evaluation flights.
Future commercial operations include strategic partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Uber. The air taxi service specifically targets airport commuting, addressing traffic congestion that reportedly cost New York area commuters approximately 102 hours in 2025.
Expanding Beyond California
The New York demonstration program follows Joby’s earlier Bay Area flight campaign this year, which featured a flight over the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the company’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour.
The NYC flight series represents significant progress in Joby’s strategy to establish operations in one of the nation’s most congested metropolitan transportation markets.
Joby’s conforming aircraft Type Inspection Authorization flight represented one of the latest critical achievements in the FAA certification timeline prior to launching the NYC demonstration program.
