The decline was primarily attributed to performance in two critical geographic regions. American market deliveries contracted 4.3%, while China — historically a powerful growth driver for the manufacturer — experienced a 10% pullback. European markets provided the sole positive indicator, with BMW and MINI brand deliveries climbing 3%, though this growth proved insufficient to counterbalance broader losses.
BMW emphasized that its Chinese market performance exceeded the overall market contraction in the region, indicating the downturn reflects broader industry challenges rather than company-specific issues.
These figures place BMW alongside other German luxury manufacturers facing similar headwinds. Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi have each disclosed weakening China sales throughout recent reporting periods. The world’s second-largest automotive market continues grappling with economic uncertainty and intensifying domestic competition.
Contrasting electric vehicle trends
The battery electric vehicle narrative revealed stark regional divergence. European fully electric vehicle orders surged 40% during the first quarter, driven predominantly by the freshly unveiled BMW iX3 — the inaugural model utilizing the company’s innovative Neue Klasse architecture.
Sales executive Jochen Goller characterized iX3 demand as “exceptionally strong,” noting that European customers have placed over 50,000 advance orders since the reservation system launched. BMW indicated it is operating dual production shifts at its Debrecen, Hungary manufacturing facility to accommodate demand.
Globally, however, fully electric deliveries declined 20%. The American market pullback played a significant role, as the elimination of government electric vehicle tax credits substantially dampened consumer interest.
Conventional internal combustion engine sales remained relatively stable, finishing marginally above prior year levels.
Neue Klasse strategy takes center stage
BMW has committed substantial resources to the Neue Klasse platform, which forms the foundation for its upcoming generation of digitally-advanced, technology-focused vehicles. The iX3 represents the inaugural market entry, and preliminary reservation data indicates robust consumer interest — particularly across European markets.
The manufacturer expressed continued confidence in its product lineup and anticipates that expanded availability of Neue Klasse vehicles will generate increasing momentum as the year progresses.
BMW refrained from updating annual projections in Tuesday’s delivery announcement, though the company has previously identified U.S. tariff policies and volatile international trade conditions as potential risks to its forecast.
The first quarter performance mirrors a wider trend throughout the German automotive industry, where Chinese market exposure has increasingly constrained overall results as domestic Chinese manufacturers gain competitive advantage through aggressive pricing and technological advancement.
BMW’s subsequent major disclosure is anticipated with its comprehensive Q1 financial statement, which will furnish additional insight into revenue generation and profit margins underlying the delivery figures.
