A major figure in artificial intelligence research, Andrej Karpathy, revealed on Tuesday his decision to join Anthropic. The announcement came through a statement shared on the X platform.
“I’ve joined Anthropic,” Karpathy stated. “I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”
Karpathy holds the distinction of being among OpenAI’s original founders, contributing as a research scientist between 2015 and 2017. Following that chapter, he transitioned to Tesla, serving as the company’s AI director from 2017 through 2022.
Career Trajectory in Artificial Intelligence
During his tenure at Tesla, Karpathy spearheaded the computer vision division responsible for Tesla Autopilot development. His responsibilities also encompassed the training and implementation of Tesla’s proprietary inference chip technology.
In 2023, he made a return to OpenAI, assuming leadership of a division concentrated on midtraining processes and synthetic data creation. His departure from that position occurred in 2024.
His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University. Anthropic has characterized him as among the premier AI researchers globally.
He has also gained recognition for introducing the concept of “vibe coding,” terminology that has gained significant traction throughout the technology community.
Role and Responsibilities at Anthropic
Within Anthropic, Karpathy becomes part of the pretraining division. This unit executes the extensive training processes that establish Claude’s foundational capabilities and information repository.
His mission involves establishing a fresh team dedicated to utilizing Claude for accelerating pretraining research initiatives. This represents a critical domain within AI advancement.
Karpathy emphasized his continued dedication to educational endeavors. He intends to resume those activities in the future.
Anthropic develops Claude, its primary AI assistant platform. The organization directly rivals OpenAI within the large language model marketplace.
The company’s current valuation stands at approximately $61.5 billion after completing its latest funding initiative. This assessment positions it above OpenAI and approaches Tesla’s present market capitalization.
Reports suggest Anthropic is preparing for a public stock offering within the current year, potentially making it among the most closely monitored IPOs in the technology industry.
Karpathy’s transition to Anthropic reflects a broader trend throughout the AI sector, with leading researchers moving among prominent research laboratories.
His recruitment strengthens Anthropic’s research roster during a period of operational expansion for the company.
