TLDR
- Vodafone has partnered with Amazon Leo, Amazon’s satellite constellation in low Earth orbit, to provide connectivity for remote 4G and 5G base stations
- The satellite service delivers download speeds reaching 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 400 Mbps
- Initial deployment launches in Germany and Europe during 2026, followed by African expansion through Vodacom
- This partnership eliminates the requirement for costly fibre optic infrastructure in remote locations
- Amazon Leo’s constellation includes more than 200 operational satellites with additional units prepared for deployment
Vodafone has entered into a partnership with Amazon Leo, Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation, to establish connectivity for 4G and 5G mobile towers situated in remote regions throughout Europe and Africa.
The partnership announcement came on Monday, March 2, 2026.
Amazon Leo will supply backhaul connectivity that links Vodafone’s remotely located base stations to its primary telecommunications infrastructure.
The satellite platform provides download capabilities reaching 1 Gbps and upload capabilities up to 400 Mbps.
This approach eliminates the necessity for deploying fibre optic cables or establishing fixed wireless connections in locations where such installations would be prohibitively expensive or impractical.
Vodafone indicated the partnership enables more economical and efficient mobile network deployment in previously unserved territories.
European Rollout Starting in 2026
Vodafone’s initial implementation of Amazon Leo connectivity will target base stations throughout Germany, with subsequent expansion to additional European nations later in 2026.
Both companies anticipate establishing connections to the first remote mobile installations within the current year.
Following the European deployment, the initiative will extend into Africa via Vodacom, Vodafone’s African operations division.
Vodacom maintains networks across multiple African territories where establishing connectivity in remote and rural areas presents significant challenges.
Amazon Leo’s operational constellation currently comprises over 200 satellites.
Additional satellites numbering in the hundreds have been manufactured and await launch as the network continues expanding.
Vodafone’s Broader Satellite Plans
Vodafone is simultaneously developing another satellite initiative in collaboration with AST SpaceMobile.
That separate agreement concentrates on delivering satellite connectivity directly to conventional smartphones, as opposed to network infrastructure.
Vodafone has not announced a deployment timeline for the AST SpaceMobile offering.
The Amazon Leo partnership operates independently and concentrates specifically on infrastructure backhaul rather than direct-to-handset connectivity.
Vodafone stated the Amazon Leo deployment throughout Africa via Vodacom will proceed incrementally, scaling up as Amazon Leo continues developing its satellite network.
