The payment processing giant Visa has introduced Intelligent Commerce Connect, an innovative platform enabling artificial intelligence assistants to autonomously purchase goods for consumers.
The company made the announcement this Wednesday, characterizing the platform as an adaptable entry point for AI developers and retailers that remains neutral regarding networks, protocols, and token storage solutions.
This technology empowers AI assistants to navigate product listings, make selections, and finalize transactions without requiring human interaction during the payment process.
Retailers participating in the platform make their product offerings accessible within AI ecosystems. Consequently, an AI assistant serving a user can locate and acquire items from these retailers automatically.
The infrastructure manages tokenization, expenditure limitations, verification processes, and PCI compliance requirements. Retailers don’t need to redesign their current systems, as integration occurs through a unified connection to the Visa Acceptance Platform.
Intelligent Commerce Connect accepts payment methods from Visa and competing card networks. Additionally, it functions seamlessly with prominent AI agent protocols currently deployed in the market.
Managing Expenditure Limits
Consumers can register their Visa payment card and establish parameters governing AI spending capabilities. The AI assistant subsequently functions within these predefined boundaries without oversight.
This approach ensures consumers maintain financial oversight while permitting AI technology to execute purchases independently. Retailers process payments through their current payment processors without additional complications.
The platform currently operates with a limited selection of collaborating partners in a testing phase. Visa anticipates expanding availability throughout the later months of 2026.
This represents another advancement in Visa’s AI payment initiatives. The company previously unveiled Visa CLI in March, an experimental offering that permitted AI assistants to execute same-day fund transfers.
Nevermined’s Integration Using x402 Protocol
AI-focused fintech company Nevermined has successfully connected to Intelligent Commerce Connect through implementation of Coinbase’s x402 protocol.
The x402 protocol establishes a uniform method for AI assistants to programmatically initiate payment requests with merchants. Erik Reppel, who developed x402, explained the protocol functions in conjunction with protected card systems to facilitate legitimate commercial exchanges between AI assistants and retailers.
According to data from the protocol’s official website, x402 has handled $24 million in transaction activity during the previous 30-day period.
Blockchain networks such as Ethereum, Tron, and Solana have similarly developed infrastructure supporting AI agent commerce capabilities. Visa’s platform positions the company as a direct competitor to these blockchain-based solutions.
The comprehensive launch of Intelligent Commerce Connect remains on schedule for late 2026, with additional partnership revelations anticipated throughout the ongoing pilot program.
