Key Highlights
- OpenAI preparing to integrate Sora AI video generation capabilities within ChatGPT platform, The Information reports
- Independent Sora mobile application debuted in September 2025 with TikTok-inspired interface
- January 2026 saw 45% monthly decline in application installations according to Appfigures analytics
- Application dropped from Apple App Store’s top 100 ranking in the United States during early 2026
- Strategic Disney collaboration did not generate anticipated user growth
According to a March 11, 2026 report from The Information, OpenAI intends to incorporate its Sora AI video generation technology directly into ChatGPT. Sources familiar with the company’s strategic plans provided this information.
OpenAI has not issued an official statement regarding these plans. The organization did not provide commentary when contacted beyond standard business hours.
The Sora platform initially debuted as an independent mobile application in September 2025. Users could produce and distribute AI-created videos through an interface reminiscent of TikTok’s design.
The application enabled video creation through text-based prompts. Users could also generate content featuring copyrighted materials for distribution across social media-style activity feeds.
Despite generating significant interest at launch, the application encountered difficulties entering 2026. Both installation numbers and revenue declined dramatically.
TechCrunch reported in January 2026, utilizing Appfigures data, that Sora experienced a 45% month-over-month installation decrease during January. Revenue from users declined simultaneously.
The application fell below Apple’s top 100 applications on the United States App Store. Google’s Play Store rankings showed comparable deterioration.
OpenAI had established an agreement with Walt Disney enabling video generation featuring Disney intellectual property within Sora. This collaboration failed to produce sustained user engagement improvements.
ChatGPT Integration Strategy
Integrating Sora within ChatGPT would provide the video generation technology access to a substantially broader audience. ChatGPT maintains hundreds of millions of active users, vastly exceeding the independent Sora application’s reach.
According to The Information, OpenAI intends to maintain the standalone Sora application alongside the ChatGPT integration. No specific integration timeline has been disclosed.
Incorporating video generation capabilities into ChatGPT may increase OpenAI’s operational expenditures. Video-based AI models require significantly greater computational resources than text-focused alternatives.
AI Video Generation Landscape
Sora faces competition from video generation platforms developed by Meta and Alphabet’s Google division. Both technology companies have committed substantial resources to text-to-video AI development.
The decision to merge Sora into ChatGPT represents OpenAI’s broader initiative to expand beyond text-only capabilities. Multimodal systems incorporating video, image, and audio processing represent the anticipated evolution for AI applications.
Microsoft maintains an investment stake in OpenAI and has embedded OpenAI technologies throughout its product ecosystem, including Bing search and Microsoft 365 productivity suite.
OpenAI’s approach suggests a consolidation strategy centered on the ChatGPT brand, which continues to represent its most extensively adopted platform.
