Claude Introduces Memory Access and Migration Tools Amid Explosive User Growth Following Government Standoff
Anthropic has made its memory functionality available to all Claude users without subscription requirements, coinciding with a dramatic increase in platform adoption after tensions with federal authorities.
Previously restricted to paying customers, this memory capability enables Claude to retain information from previous interactions. ChatGPT had already provided this functionality to non-paying users.
Anthropic simultaneously introduced a migration utility that allows newcomers to transfer their conversation archives from competing AI platforms including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot through a straightforward copy-paste procedure.
The transfer mechanism requires users to request their existing chatbot export its information as a code block format. This exported data is then inserted into Claude’s settings within the Memory area, followed by selecting “Add to memory.”
Processing the imported data may require up to one day. Individuals can examine what information Claude has retained about them and modify or delete any unwanted details.
ChatGPT has not yet introduced a comparable migration feature for incoming users. Google is developing its own alternative, though it remains unreleased.
These feature launches come after a confrontation between Anthropic and military authorities. The company declined to permit its artificial intelligence systems to support widespread domestic monitoring or completely autonomous weaponry.
President Trump subsequently directed all government departments to discontinue Claude usage. Military leadership additionally designated Anthropic as a supply-chain security concern.
Claude Climbs to App Store Summit Following Federal Dispute
This decision seems to have boosted Claude’s popularity. The application reached the top position in Apple’s App Store free category, surpassing ChatGPT.
Unpaid active accounts on Claude have expanded beyond 60% since the year began. Registration numbers per day have multiplied fourfold during this timeframe.
The influx of new accounts triggered a system disruption Monday. Anthropic acknowledged the platform was inaccessible for multiple hours due to what it described as “unprecedented demand.” Service restoration occurred by mid-morning Eastern time.
Concurrently, OpenAI revealed intentions to implement its artificial intelligence systems within Defense Department secure networks. This announcement prompted certain ChatGPT users to advocate for a boycott.
Memory Migration Process Details
Individuals begin by accessing Claude’s configuration menu and locating the Capabilities option. They then navigate to the Memory segment and choose “Start import.”
Following insertion of the code block exported from another chatbot platform, Claude initiates data processing. Users can verify imported content under “See what Claude learned about you.”
Anthropic verified the migration utility supports ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The feature is currently accessible to all account holders.
