This launch represents a clear challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 range, and the Bavarian manufacturer makes no attempt to disguise its competitive intent.
The i3 arrives in one configuration initially — designated the 50 xDrive — featuring dual electric motors powering all four wheels and generating 469 horsepower. While Tesla‘s Model 3 Performance delivers slightly more at 510 horsepower, BMW counters with a different competitive advantage.
The German automaker projects 900 kilometers of range according to European WLTP testing standards, which converts to approximately 440 miles using EPA methodology. This figure substantially surpasses the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309 EPA-rated miles and even exceeds the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile range.
Thanks to 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive technology, the i3 can recover approximately 250 miles of driving range during just a 10-minute charging session. BMW targets a zero-to-60 mph acceleration time of roughly four seconds.
Cabin Features and Digital Systems
BMW has completely reimagined the interior space around a sweeping 40-inch panoramic screen spanning the entire dashboard width. The upgraded iDrive interface operates on BMW’s latest Heart of Joy computing architecture, delivering performance speeds 10 times faster than prior generations.
Physically, this new i3 surpasses the current 3 Series dimensions — it’s longer, wider, and taller — while the exterior styling offers a glimpse at the forthcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series design direction.
While official US pricing remains unannounced, industry expectations place the i3 around the $55,000 mark. This positions it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximately $47,490 starting price, but directly competitive with the Model 3 Performance at $54,990.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Market Launch
BMW’s Munich manufacturing facility will begin producing the i3 in August 2026. European customers can expect their vehicles starting fall 2026, though American buyers face a longer wait — US market deliveries aren’t projected until 2027.
The automaker has confirmed additional variants are in development, including a fully electric M3 performance model. Both the i3 sedan and iX3 SUV represent initial entries in an extensive Neue Klasse expansion that encompasses four additional forthcoming models.
BMW characterizes the Neue Klasse initiative as the largest financial commitment in the company’s entire history.
Wall Street analysts maintain a Hold rating consensus on BAMXF stock, with five Buy recommendations, five Hold ratings, and three Sell calls issued during the previous three months. The consensus price target stands at $104.23, suggesting potential upside of approximately 14.3% from present trading levels.
BMW.DE closed Wednesday’s session down 0.20%, while Tesla (TSLA) declined 0.38%.
