On Monday, March 16, Apple revealed the AirPods Max 2, representing the inaugural major revision to its premium over-ear headphones since their December 2020 debut.
The refreshed model incorporates Apple’s H2 processor, the same silicon that powers both the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4. This chip upgrade introduces numerous capabilities to the Max series that were absent from the original version.
According to Apple, the updated headphones provide Active Noise Cancellation performance that’s up to 1.5 times more powerful than the inaugural generation. This enhancement stems from the H2 chip combined with advanced computational audio processing.
The improved ANC specifically addresses common noise sources such as aircraft engines and subway systems. Additionally, Transparency mode has been refined to deliver more authentic sound reproduction.
Regarding sound quality, Apple has integrated a new high dynamic range amplifier into the design. The company maintains this enhancement boosts audio clarity while preserving the signature sonic character of the original AirPods Max.
For the first time in the Max lineup, the second-generation model enables 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback. Users can access this capability through the bundled USB-C cable.
Exclusive Features Debut on AirPods Max
Adaptive Audio technology, Conversation Awareness functionality, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation all make their first appearance on the Max platform. These capabilities have been standard on the second-generation AirPods Pro since their release.
Live Translation, driven by Apple Intelligence, enables users to engage in real-time cross-language communication. Voice Isolation eliminates background noise during phone calls by leveraging the H2 chip’s computational audio processing.
Conversation Awareness intelligently reduces media volume when the user begins speaking with someone in their vicinity. Adaptive Audio dynamically modifies ANC and Transparency settings according to the ambient environment.
Two capabilities specifically cater to content creators. Studio-quality audio capture is optimized for podcasters, journalists, and musicians. Camera remote functionality allows users to control iPhone or iPad photography and videography through the Digital Crown.
The latest AirPods Max also incorporate gaming enhancements. When paired with Game Mode on iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices, the headphones deliver minimized audio lag.
Cost, Color Options, and Launch Details
AirPods Max 2 retail for $549 in the United States. The original model also launched at $549, meaning the price remains consistent across generations.
The headphones are offered in five color variants: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Pre-orders commence on March 25 through Apple’s online store and the Apple Store application. In-store availability and customer deliveries begin in early April.
Apple highlighted environmental improvements as well. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth materials in every magnet and 100% recycled polyester fabric in the ear cushions.
New Apple Music members receive three complimentary months with an AirPods Max 2 purchase.
