In a significant expansion move, Amazon (AMZN) has revealed intentions to pour an additional €18 billion—approximately $21 billion—into Spain’s technological infrastructure.
This substantial capital injection will be directed toward building additional data centers and enhancing artificial intelligence capabilities throughout the nation.
When combined with previous commitments, Amazon’s comprehensive investment in Spain reaches €33.7 billion.
This marks the Seattle-based company’s most significant technology-focused investment on Spanish soil.
The announcement coincides with Amazon celebrating a decade and a half of business presence in the country.
The strategic expansion prioritizes Amazon Web Services platform development.
This initiative seeks to strengthen cloud computing and AI service delivery throughout the European continent.
According to Amazon officials, the investment responds to escalating demand for cloud-based solutions.
The funding will simultaneously address increasing requirements for AI-powered technologies and services.
The corporation has designated Aragón as the primary location for new data center construction.
Infrastructure development will extend across Zaragoza, Huesca, and Teruel provinces.
Amazon established its AWS Europe Spain region in Aragón during November 2022.
Since then, the region has facilitated cloud technology adoption among commercial enterprises and governmental organizations.
Financial Impact and Job Creation
According to Amazon’s projections, the comprehensive investment package will inject €31.7 billion into Spain’s gross domestic product by 2035.
The expansion is forecast to generate roughly 29,900 full-time equivalent positions on an annual basis.
Approximately 6,700 positions will be directly employed by Amazon facilities.
Direct hiring will encompass data center technicians, engineering professionals, and various support personnel.
Beyond direct employment, the project will generate jobs through vendor relationships and construction partnerships.
Secondary and tertiary employment effects will contribute to overall economic growth.
Amazon intends to establish supply chain infrastructure supporting data center functionality.
Planned facilities encompass a server production plant with integrated testing capabilities.
The company will also develop a specialized facility for repairing AI and machine learning servers.
Additionally, a distribution warehouse will be constructed to service infrastructure requirements.
Once these supply chain locations reach full capacity, they’re projected to employ approximately 1,800 workers.
Each of these facilities will operate within Aragón’s boundaries.
Amazon indicates that over fifty percent of the total economic benefits will flow to Aragón.
Regional economic forecasts suggest €18.5 billion in GDP contributions reaching the area by 2035.
