Google DeepMind has forged a strategic alliance with Agile Robots, a Munich-headquartered manufacturer of advanced robotic arms and humanoid automation systems. This collaboration will integrate DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models directly into Agile Robots’ physical platforms.
Agile Robots currently operates more than 20,000 robotic units deployed worldwide. The firm has secured over $270 million in venture capital from prominent investors including SoftBank Vision Fund, Xiaomi, and Midas Group.
Initially, the collaboration will concentrate on what the partners characterize as “premium industrial” deployments. Target sectors include electronics assembly, automotive manufacturing, warehouse logistics, and data center management.
The strategy centers on creating a continuous improvement cycle: operational robot data flows back into machine learning systems, subsequently enhancing robotic performance. This type of practical data collection is challenging to replicate in controlled laboratory environments.
“By combining Agile Robots’ physical systems and additional AI robotic technologies developed in Germany with Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models, both organizations will enhance capabilities through robot implementation, information gathering, model refinement and continuous improvement,” the partners announced in a collaborative statement.
Carolina Parada, Senior Director and Head of Robotics at Google DeepMind, noted that Agile Robots will contribute to developing “more sophisticated AI systems for tomorrow’s robotic platforms.”
Google’s Expanding Robotics Footprint
This agreement forms part of a wider strategic expansion Google has been executing throughout the robotics sector. In mid-2025, the company unveiled Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER, two artificial intelligence systems engineered to convert linguistic and visual information into physical robotic actions.
In January 2026, Google DeepMind announced a collaboration with Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics to create innovative AI systems for the Atlas humanoid platform. Boston Dynamics was previously under Google’s ownership between 2013 and 2017.
Google has also collaborated with Texas-based Apptronik to develop humanoid automation using Gemini 2.0 technology. Additionally, last month the company relocated its robotics software division Intrinsic from the “Other Bets” category into core operations.
Internal Concerns and Market Rivalry
Not all stakeholders within Google are completely aligned. According to Business Insider, certain DeepMind staff members expressed reservations during an all-company meeting this year regarding Boston Dynamics’ ongoing agreements with the U.S. Defense Department.
From a competitive standpoint, Google faces significant competition from Amazon and Tesla, both companies making substantial investments in robotics as a fundamental AI application.
Google also recruited Aaron Saunders, previously Chief Technology Officer at Boston Dynamics, to oversee robotics initiatives at DeepMind in November 2024. Alphabet’s investment division CapitalG spearheaded a $270 million financing round for Bedrock Robotics last month, a construction automation venture established by former Waymo and Segment executives.
