TLDR
- The streaming platform Netflix has purchased InterPositive, Ben Affleck’s AI-driven filmmaking technology company launched in 2022.
- The acquisition’s financial details remain confidential.
- InterPositive develops artificial intelligence solutions for production issues including missing footage and lighting inconsistencies.
- Ben Affleck transitions into a senior advisory position at Netflix post-acquisition.
- This represents Netflix’s first major acquisition following its withdrawal from pursuing Warner Bros Discovery’s entertainment assets.
The streaming powerhouse Netflix made a strategic announcement Thursday, revealing its acquisition of InterPositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking platform co-created by Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor Ben Affleck.
The companies chose not to reveal the purchase price or financial arrangements.
Affleck established InterPositive in 2022. The venture develops artificial intelligence solutions tailored specifically for motion picture production environments.
The platform’s fundamental technology relies on an AI system trained to comprehend visual storytelling logic and editorial coherence. It addresses practical production challenges — such as incomplete footage, improper lighting conditions, and narrative inconsistencies.
“We’ve integrated protective measures to safeguard artistic vision, ensuring these tools facilitate responsible experimentation while maintaining creative authority with the artists themselves,” Affleck stated in his announcement.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, reinforced this philosophy. “Our belief is that emerging technologies should broaden creative possibilities, not limit them or substitute the contributions of writers, directors, performers, and production teams,” she explained.
Affleck, renowned for directing the Academy Award-winning film Argo, transitions into his new role as a senior advisor at Netflix.
Netflix’s Return to Acquisitions
This transaction represents Netflix’s first significant acquisition since withdrawing from competitive negotiations to purchase Warner Bros Discovery’s production facilities and streaming properties. That bidding process concluded with Paramount Skydance presenting the winning proposal.
The purchase demonstrates Netflix’s strategic emphasis on AI-enhanced production capabilities rather than acquiring conventional content catalogs or traditional studio operations.
Entertainment Industry’s Evolving AI Perspective
The media and entertainment sector’s approach to artificial intelligence has transformed dramatically. Just recently, concerns about workforce displacement and copyright protection dominated industry discussions — issues that fueled the 2023 strikes involving writers and performers.
Currently, major studios are adopting a different approach.
Last year, Disney revealed its decision to permit OpenAI access to intellectual property from its Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel properties for integration into the company’s Sora AI video generation platform.
Netflix’s InterPositive purchase reflects comparable thinking — leveraging AI as a production enhancement tool rather than a creative substitute.
InterPositive’s technology incorporates deliberate limitations. The artificial intelligence adheres to cinematic principles while accommodating the unpredictable nature of on-location filming, ensuring human creators retain ultimate decision-making authority.
Affleck’s relationship with the technology continues beyond the transaction. His senior advisory appointment at Netflix maintains his connection to the platform’s evolution within one of the globe’s largest streaming services.
Netflix stock experienced a 0.17% increase on Thursday.
