3M (MMM) has finalized an extended supply partnership with Airbus that encompasses thermal and acoustic insulation technologies for the Airbus A220 aircraft. Market response was positive, with MMM shares advancing 1.63% and Airbus stock climbing 0.83%.
The partnership involves 3M delivering two distinct insulation solutions for the A220’s cabin environment. Thermal insulation materials will enhance the aircraft’s operational efficiency, while acoustic insulation products will be deployed throughout the cabin interior to minimize noise from engines and airframe components.
This arrangement strengthens an already established partnership between 3M and Airbus. According to 3M, their ongoing collaboration encompasses multiple aerospace materials and technological applications that extend well beyond just the A220 program.
Specific financial details of the contract remain undisclosed.
Eric Forbes, who serves as Vice President of Aerospace and Defense at 3M, spoke about the partnership: “Our long-term agreement with Airbus reflects the value of deep collaboration in bringing advanced materials science to the future of aviation.”
Forbes continued: “Together, we are helping enhance both comfort and performance through technologies that passengers can feel directly in the cabin and that airlines can rely on across the life of the aircraft.”
Agreement Specifications
The acoustic insulation solutions will be deployed across the entire A220 cabin structure. These materials are engineered to diminish noise levels experienced by passengers and flight crew from engine operations and airframe vibrations during all flight phases.
The thermal insulation aspect addresses operational performance objectives. These materials are designed to support aircraft efficiency throughout the program’s operational lifespan.
3M indicated its intention to pursue additional innovation initiatives with Airbus that extend beyond the current A220 platform.
A220 Aircraft Background
The A220 represents a narrow-body commercial airliner initially created by Bombardier under the C Series designation before Airbus acquired controlling interest in the program during 2018. The aircraft accommodates 100 to 150 passengers based on cabin layout and serves the single-aisle regional jet segment.
For 3M, aerospace and defense operations constitute one component of its broader industrial portfolio. This A220 supply partnership establishes a sustained revenue channel connected to Airbus manufacturing output for this specific aircraft model.
3M has not disclosed information regarding contract duration, volume requirements, or anticipated revenue projections associated with this agreement.
The partnership was formally announced on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Both organizations characterized the agreement as demonstrating their mutual commitment to advancing passenger experience and aircraft capabilities through materials science innovation.
3M emphasized that this deal strengthens its established relationship with Airbus, encompassing diverse aerospace materials and technologies deployed across numerous aircraft programs.
