Shares of Reddit tumbled 5% following Meta’s introduction of Forum, a dedicated application designed for Facebook Groups featuring AI-enhanced tools and community-focused discussions similar to Reddit’s platform.
On May 25, Meta unveiled Forum, a standalone mobile application centered around Facebook Groups. The platform prioritizes community-driven conversations over conventional social media feeds.
According to Meta, Forum serves as “a dedicated space built for deeper discussions, real answers, and the communities you care about.” The application seamlessly integrates with users’ current Facebook Groups, eliminating the need to rebuild communities from the ground up.
Reddit stock declined 5% shortly after the announcement went public. Investors interpreted the move as Meta positioning itself to compete directly with Reddit’s core business model.
Users can participate in Forum discussions using pseudonyms while maintaining their Facebook account connection. Any content published through Forum remains accessible within the corresponding Facebook Groups on the main Facebook platform.
The application’s feed emphasizes ongoing community conversations rather than viral or trending material. Meta emphasizes its goal to help users “see what real people are saying” instead of algorithm-driven engagement content.
Artificial Intelligence Integration
Forum incorporates an AI-driven “Ask” feature that enables users to submit questions and receive aggregated responses from conversations occurring across multiple groups. This functionality aims to quickly deliver recommendations, guidance, and community insights.
Community administrators receive access to an AI assistant within Forum to facilitate community management and content oversight. This supplements the existing moderation capabilities already provided to group leaders.
The application currently supports iOS 18 and later versions in selected regions, including the United States. While Meta hasn’t announced a specific timeline for Android availability, development is expected. Forum carries a 13+ age rating.
Meta’s Latest App Development Push
Forum represents Meta’s second recent application launch. The company debuted “Instants” in April, focusing on temporary photo sharing among Instagram connections, inviting comparisons to Snapchat and BeReal.
This also isn’t Meta’s inaugural standalone Groups application. The company previously launched a dedicated Facebook Groups app in 2014 before discontinuing it in 2017.
The recent development activity aligns with statements from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who reportedly informed staff that AI-enhanced development processes could enable Meta to release applications at an accelerated pace. He mentioned the possibility of creating “50 new apps,” while indicating the company would begin with more modest ambitions.
Wall Street analysts maintain a consensus Strong Buy rating on Meta (META) stock, with 38 analysts weighing in over the past three months — 31 Buy ratings and 7 Hold ratings. The average analyst price target stands at $817.71, suggesting approximately 36% potential upside from current trading levels.
Reddit has remained silent regarding the Forum application launch.
